چکیده

This paper is a summary overview of a study conducted at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (NASAMSFC) during the initial phases of the Space Launch Initiative (SLI) program to evaluate a large number of technical problems associated with the design, development, test, evaluation and operation of several major liquid propellant rocket engine systems (i.e., SSME, Fastrac, J-2, F-I). One of the primary results of this study was the identification of the “Fundamental Root Causes” that enabled the technical problems to manifest, and practices that can be implemented to prevent them from recumng in future propulsion system development efforts, such as that which is currently envisioned in the field of nuclear thermal propulsion (NTF’). This paper will discus the Fundamental Root Causes, cite some examples of how the technical problems arose from them, and provide a discussion of how they can be mitigated or avoided in t h ~ , development of an NTP system.

Lessons Learned During TBCC Design for the NASA-AFRL Joint System Study

NASA and the Air Force Research Laboratory are involved in a Joint System Study (JSS) on Two-Stage-to-Orbit (TSTO) vehicles. The JSS will examine the performance, operability and analysis uncertainty of unmanned, fully reusable, TSTO launch vehicle concepts. NASA is providing a vehicle concept using turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) propulsion on the booster stage and an all-rocket orbiter. T...

آتشزنه‌ها در سیستم‌های پیشرانش مایع غیرخود مشتعل شونده

Liquid propulsion systems have effective role in implementation of space and military mission due to high performance and specific impulse. Liquid propellants are divided into two categories: hypergolic and non-hypergolic propellants. Non-hypergolic propellants need an igniter system to provide the initial energy for propellant ignition compared with hypergolic propellants. Since failure in ign...

Cycle Trades for Nuclear Thermal Rocket Propulsion Systems

Nuclear fission has been used as a reliable source for utility power in the United States for decades. Even in the 1940’s, long before the United States had a viable space program, the theoretical benefits of nuclear power as applied to space travel were being explored [Humble, et. al.]. These benefits include long-life operation and high performance, particularly in the form of vehicle power d...
